Why We Have This Policy

The Surgeon General of the United States has determined that tobacco smoking is the nation s leading preventable cause of premature death and disability. Tobacco smoke is hazardous to the health of smokers and non-smokers alike. To promote a safe and healthful work environment, and in accordance with California Government Code 19994.30 through 19994.35, UC Berkeley has adopted this policy to encourage smokers to reduce or eliminate their consumption of tobacco, and to protect non-smokers from exposure to tobacco smoke.

Responsibilities

Smokers must:

  • Respect the rights of non-smokers.
  • Smoke only in approved areas.
  • Make sure their smoke does not enter buildings.

Non-Smokers must:

  • Respect the rights of smokers.

  • Report violations of this policy to their supervisor, Management Services Officer, department or building safety committee, or University Health Services.

The success of this policy depends on everyone in the campus community cooperating and showing consideration for the concerns of others.
