Policy SummarySmoking is not permitted inside any facility owned or leased by the University of California Berkeley, regardless of location. Smoking is not permitted in any outdoor campus facility used for spectator sports, meetings, entertainment, dining, or designated children s play areas. Smoking is permitted outdoors except within 20 feet from campus building entrances, exits, or operable windows. Advertising tobacco products on campus is not permitted. Who Should Read this PolicyEveryone at UC BerkeleyWhy We Have This PolicyThe Surgeon General of the United States has determined that tobacco smoking is the nation s leading preventable cause of premature death and disability. Tobacco smoke is hazardous to the health of smokers and non-smokers alike. To promote a safe and healthful work environment, and in accordance with California Government Code 19994.30 through 19994.35, UC Berkeley has adopted this policy to encourage smokers to reduce or eliminate their consumption of tobacco, and to protect non-smokers from exposure to tobacco smoke. ADVERTISEMENTS FOR TOBACCO PRODUCTS Advertising of tobacco products is prohibited on campus, or in off-campus facilities owned or leased by UC Berkeley, except for advertising in newspapers, magazines, or other written material bought, sold, or distributed within the building. |
